Aspect Ratio Constraint

Shift can lock proportions while resizing.

Best experienced with a pointer.

The problem

Free resize casually warps images and frames when the author meant to scale them proportionally.

The solution

Shift constrains resize so proportions stay locked.

Experiment

Play with the values

Default ratio
40px

How it works

  • The resize starts from a corner handle.
  • Shift is detected as a constraint for this drag only.
  • The object's aspect ratio at the start of the drag is the lock.
  • The pointer is projected onto the line that preserves that ratio.
  • Width and height are both written from that projection.
  • Releasing Shift returns the drag to free resize.
