Palm Rejection

The resting hand should not become input.

Best experienced with a pointer.

The problem

A resting palm on a tablet registers as ink or taps, destroying intentional stylus or finger strokes.

The solution

Palm geometry and stylus proximity filter incidental contacts from ink.

How it works

  • Every touch contact arrives, including a palm resting on the screen.
  • Contact radius is measured; a palm is larger than a fingertip or stylus.
  • That size is compared with a palm threshold.
  • Oversized or incidental contacts are rejected, and a nearby stylus can suppress the hand.
  • Only accepted input is drawn.

Seen in

Stylus note apps

Writing hand rests on the glass without leaving smudges of ink.

Drawing tablets

Palm rejection keeps brushes responding only to the pen tip.

Signature capture

Large heel-of-hand contacts never become part of the signature path.

Whiteboard tablets

Annotation stays clean while the non-drawing hand braces the device.
